How does TiscaliSat work...

TisacaliSat consists of a 75cm elliptical satellite dish mounted on or near your home or office. The dish must have a clear unobstructed view of the southern sky. Two standard coaxial cables connect the satellite dish antenna to a TisacaliSat modem.

The antenna both sends requests to the Internet and receives Internet content via the satellite, which is in orbit pproximately 36,000 km above the equator. The satellite communicates with the TisacaliSat groundstation, which has a very fast connection to the Internet.

Inside your residence, the TisacaliSat system consists of a satellite modem that attaches to your home PC through a USB port. No telephone connection, is needed. Tiscali is all you need. Both the indoor and outdoor satellite equipment used by the Tiscali service is provided by Gilat Satellite Networks, a worldwide leader in satellite networking technology. For more information about Gilat, please visit www.gilat.com

TiscaliSat is a Broadband IP star network (one central hub and many remote sites). The hub transmits a DVB outbound signal to the many remote VSAT modems, and it receives inbound signals from the VSATs.

The satellite modem connects to the PC via a USB port. The modem receives the DVB signal at rates ranging from 150kbps up to 400kbps and it transmits at rates of up to 150kbps. When users browse the Internet, they generate bursty traffic, which is handled through contention mode. File uploads, which require longer uninterrupted access use dedicated bandwidth. At the hub, specialized servers support Broadband IP and performance enhancement applications such as TCP optimization, QoS and the Internet Page Acceleration (A Gilat Satellite Networks feature).
